Letizia Battaglia (1935–2022) was a renowned Italian photojournalist and anti-mafia activist from Palermo who documented the brutal Sicilian mafia wars and local poverty while working for the newspaper L’Ora from 1974 to 1991. Beyond her harrowing documentary photography, she co-founded the Centro siciliano Giuseppe Impastato, engaged in local politics as a Green Party city councilor, and established cultural ventures including the Centro Internazionale di Fotografia. As the first European woman to earn the Eugene Smith Grant, her impactful career was recognized with multiple international honors prior to her passing in Palermo
